It FINALLY feels like spring is here! Although it’s been really windy here the last week or so, it was warm enough yesterday to get out in the yard and start cleaning up some of the garden beds. A few of my grape hyacinth and crocus are starting to bloom, and the migratory birds are beginning to arrive.
The mallard who nested in our tree last year has been wandering around the yard again, so we hope she’ll choose her same nesting place. Yes, I DID say she nested in a tree! Not all that common for mallards, as they usually are ground nesters, but this one must have wanted a better view. Here was last year’s nest:
And here is hubster pointing out where it was located:
Funny thing is, this tree is located right next to his garage, which he is in and out of several times a day. We had seen the hen in the yard often, and looked all around the shrubs and tall grass, but just couldn’t find the nest (didn’t think to look up). One day, he saw those long branches sticking out of the tree, and he started to grab one to pull it out. I don’t know who jumped higher, the hen or Rudy! They both startled one another, and after that we had fun watching to see if she was there and when the eggs would hatch. Unfortunately, we missed seeing the ducklings leave the nest by about a 1/2 hour. Maybe this year we’ll be luckier.
