I’m so excited! I’ve got a secret. It’s a fun one, I promise, although I can’t tell you about it just yet. But it DOES have to do with my journey as a quilter.
In case you didn’t know, I started quilting as a hobby back in the 1980s. My first quilt was a hand-pieced, hand-quilted quilt-as-you-go log cabin. This was back when we had to weave our own cloth and carve our needles out of animal bones…
…well, okay, I AM exaggerating a little bit here! I was self taught (with the help of a friend who really didn’t know what she was doing either) so I did everything “wrong.” This was before rotary cutters, so I marked my pieces with ball point pen (aacckk!), cut them with scissors, used polyester blend fabrics, and pieced and quilted with white quilting thread, which was about all we had available at the time. Oh, and I finished the quilt with some sort of weird 2″ wide border/binding combination.
In 1995 I decided to turn my hobby into a business, and I started designing paper-piecing patterns. My first one was my ‘Paper-Pieced Alphabet’
followed by ‘Home Sweet Home’ and a couple of Christmas designs. Shortly after, I began teaching some quilting classes at local shops and for quilt guilds.
In 2000, my ‘Annie’s Star’ pattern
was not only published in American Patchwork & Quilting Magazine, but even made the cover!
I also had a few patterns in the now defunct Miniature Quilts Magazine.
I then began longarm quilting for customers in 2001, eventually moving my business to commercial space and adding a second, computerized quilting machine. I even had a small retail shop where I sold fabrics, taught classes, and enjoyed helping customers find just the right pattern and fabrics to create heirlooms for their family and friends.
Now that my longarm business is back in my home, and I’m only running one machine, I’ve had time to pursue another aspect of quilting that has interested me for some time. Can you guess what it is? I’m excited to say that I should be ready to go live with it in the very near future. Won’t you subscribe to my blog at the top of this page (or down below if you’re on a mobile device) so you’ll be among the first to know ‘that which cannot yet be named’? And comment below with your guess of what my secret is – maybe there will even be a prize for the first correct answer!
